“The reference to the Mona Lisa, as the greatest icon in art history, involves bringing out its most significant detail – the smile. Just as the poster for the previous Bienal dialogs with Op Art, this one does so with Pop Art, as the movement that had been the great star of the 9th Bienal. This dialog is seen in the fact of the detail being enlarged to make reticules visible, a typical Roy Uchtenstein ploy, and in its use of images from the mass media, which was a recurring feature of Andy Warhol’s work.”.
